My big goal this year is to travel and explore more, while NOT backing out of opportunities. Last year, I unintentionally made a habit of signing up for hikes, camping trips, etc. and then canceling my reservation. My first adventure requiring commitment this year was meant to be a Backpacking trip to Assateague Island National Seashore. I was joining a group, Girls Who Hike Virginia. I wanted to do this for multiple reasons. We were originally planning a night at Kiptopeke State Park, where I have not been in years. The 2nd night would be backcountry at Assateague, where I have never visited. Then, of course, there is the desire to go on a successful backpacking trip. And even though this one would not include the elevation that I experienced on my first Intro to Backpacking in 2024, it would still get me out in the backcountry again.

I was feeling really good, although nervous about the overnight temps (low 20’s.) Finally, two weeks before the upcoming weekend, I went to REI to purchase some camping essentials, and became completely overwhelmed. I have not hiked or pursued outdoor activities enough in the winter to have acquired the necessary gear. I messaged the coordinator and let her know how I was feeling about it. She reassured me that winter backpacking is not for everyone.

At first I was deflated and frustrated. I was doing my best to be more active and feel physically prepared to hike a few miles with 30-40 lbs on my back. I was feeling good. However, I tried to put things in perspective, and realized that going on a trip that I was not prepared for would lead to even greater frustration. It turns out there’s a possibility the trip will be postponed/canceled due to “frigid” temps overnight. Also, not going is freeing me up to enjoy activities that I was going to miss, such as a trail maintenance at my local state park, and a social meet-up for crochet.

All is not lost this month, as I have a holiday weekend coming up and may be able to go on a little adventure of my own, with George of course. George travels well in the van and seems to enjoy our adventures. He handles trails, summits, and waterfalls like a boss!

For now, I will continue my run/walk training, some weights, yoga, and hiking. I will pursue activities that boost my confidence and lead to being mentally and physically prepared for what comes ahead.
