This week, I want to talk about my desire to create. When my family gets together for anything, there are some basic activities we always do. We spend time outside. We play games. We create! Everyone loves to draw and sometimes we even turn drawing into a game. I often struggle with the drawing, not because I do not enjoy it, but because I fall into the trap of comparing my drawing or I have a hard time thinking of what to draw. I sketch at home, but my sketching is often journaling as well, and sometimes personal, so I tend not to share my sketchbook with others.
This year, I moved to a new school and one of my co-workers in the Library crochets. She arrives early and sits in the dark, with some fairy lights, and crochets before our day begins. I love that she does this and I mentioned that I have wanted (and tried) to learn to crochet. I told her about the two skeins of yarn and the pack of hooks that I purchase last winter and tried to learn using a creator on YouTube. She shared the website and contact information for the person who teaches classes and hosts meet-ups.
So, this month, I completed a 3 part Intro to Crochet class with Mandie (former Librarian!) at Yarn Party. We met the first 3 Saturdays of January for 2 1/2 hours each week. We learned the basic stitches and were given yarn and supplies to complete “homework” projects each week. The first week I made fingerless gloves. Last week, I made a little purse/tote bag, which I have not assembled. It’s currently a square and a long strap, so I need to seam the two together. This week, I am going to crochet my first beanie! I will add a little video of the gloves to this post and follow-up on a later post with pics of the tote and hat … I am quite nervous how the hat will turn out, though, just being honest.
This was a great investment of my time, money, and energy! I learned a new skill and enjoyed meeting new people. I also plan to attend the meet-ups, where I can socialize to the extent that I choose, and work on any project I choose. I now have a new outlet to create that I can bring with me when I travel. And if I am not in a drawing mood, I will just pull out my yarn and do my own thing.
Thank you for joining me here as I continue to travel, explore, create, and discover what holds me back from any and all of it. Have a great week!
